Random conversation…an evening with my aunt…

I have this yearning, an intense desire for knowledge of my female ancestors. The women who came before me; and the women before them. Whose shoulders do I stand on; who are these strong, powerful Goddesses that protects and guides me?

For me, I believe that learning about your ancestors and having a deep understanding of where you cane from gives you a sense of self worth, belonging and value of family.

My mother came from a large family; eight sisters and two brothers. My mother died six years ago. My one regret is that I did not have conversations with her about our ancestors. As of today I have only two aunts that are still alive; one of which I’m close with and who is currently the historian and griot of the family.

I visited my aunt today; we sat and talked for hours. I learned so much; I discovered information about my family I didn’t know existed; I had great aunts, and great uncles. Even stories about my mom and her sisters younger years…chasing and confronting cheating boyfriends to family members who were gay, and of my grandfather fathering three children outside of his marriage.

I look forward to more of these conversation…this experience was an eye opener for me…I need to know more about these interesting people… #ancestors #family #heritage #pearlzduaghter #aunt #familytree #infidelity

  1. Family is the foundation to our journey in life…some years ago I started down this road to knowing my ancestors because of my choices and experiences in my life…at one point I found out I even had uncles and greater grandparents who were also white folks or Portuguese origin…I learned this from my father…having a close relationship with family we can learn so much about ourselves and in turn pass it on to our children….
